explanation作“解释、讲解、说明”时是不可数的，ex.I should say a few words of explanation.但是作“能说明事物原由的言语、事实、情况等”时是可数的。ex.That's not an adequate explanation.

nancy 的解释是正确的。其实在外国人看来几乎所有的名词都有可数和不可数两种形式，关键在于用在什么语言环境下。
